Wombats Survive Best Efforts to Lose

The Tokyo Wombats secured a hard-fought 13-run victory over Aoyama Gakuin on Sunday at YC&AC, successfully defending 127 despite spending much of the afternoon demonstrating that cricket is, at its core, a game of chaos. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Wombats put together a score that could best be described as “probably enough… maybe.”

After a solid start from Sunit Rajan (30), the innings was held together by a typically aggressive 40 from captain Ken Dobson, who smashed four boundaries and three sixes while single-handedly dragging the team’s total into vaguely defendable territory. The batting card contained the usual Wombats variety show.

Returning opener Louis Chan announced his comeback by getting out hit wicket for 1, proving there are still innovative ways to get dismissed in cricket. Meanwhile Hamza Arif made 8 before being trapped LBW, after which he mounted what witnesses described as a “spirited legal challenge” to the umpire’s decision. The appeal was rejected and cricket law remains unchanged.

The lower order then collapsed enthusiastically, with the Wombats losing their final six wickets for just 24 runs. Ash Canning recorded a duck from eight balls, demonstrating a level of restraint rarely seen in modern cricket. Fortunately, Aoyama’s bowlers contributed 25 extras, which was enough for extras to comfortably outscore most of the Wombats batting lineup.

At the change of innings, 127 did not look like a winning score. The Wombats’ bowlers disagreed. The early breakthrough came when Sanira Satoshi removed opener Masashi Mutoh, caught brilliantly by Louis Chan. Then came the Hamza Arif Show. First he ran out Hidehiko Matsuchika. Then he bowled Kusal Abeygunawardana. Then he bowled Kazuki Takita. Then he bowled Aoyama captain Tsubasa Aoto first ball. Then, just for variety, he completed another run out.

By the end of the innings Hamza had collected 3 wickets and 2 run outs, turning a tight chase into a full-scale batting evacuation. His two run outs earn an easy nomination for Great Moments in Sport, with both dismissals arriving at pivotal moments of the chase. Aoyama looked set to push towards the target before Hamza repeatedly reminded them that running between wickets is a privilege, not a right.

The rest of the bowling attack provided strong support. Ian Sinclair picked up two wickets, including a stumping recorded by wicketkeeper Ash Canning, while Stuart Mcdonald, Aidan Sarawan, and Sanira Satoshi chipped in with important breakthroughs.

Best Catch Nomination: Louis Chan

Having already introduced himself to the scorebook via the rarely seen hit-wicket dismissal, Louis redeemed himself with a superb catch on the boundary and another catch at mid-off to remove the opening batsman. A genuine all-round contribution, albeit in ways nobody expected.

Worst Drop Nomination: Ken Dobson

After racing around long-off, covering significant ground and doing absolutely everything right, Ken completed the difficult part of the catch before spectacularly failing the easy bit. The immediate reaction was audible across much of Yokohama.

Golden Thong Nomination: Joe Lewis

Bowled out two batsmen. Celebrated twice. Took zero wickets. Both deliveries were no-balls. Statistically impressive in all the wrong categories.

Golden Thong Nomination: Louis Chan

Returned from cricketing exile. Opened the batting. Managed to get himself out hit wicket. Immediate impact.

Golden Thong Nomination: Hamza Arif

Attempted to overturn an LBW decision through discussion after already being given out. Confidence was high. Success rate was lower.

Quote of the Week: Joe Lewis

After Evan suggested that perhaps bowling at off stump might be helpful during Joe’s fifth consecutive wide: “Shut the fuck up, Evan.” A masterclass in concise communication.

Special Mention: Ian Sinclair

For asking the umpire, approximately every 30 seconds: “Three bowled or three left to bowl?” The joke never improved. Ian never stopped.

Final Word

A score of 127. A hit wicket. A duck. Two wickets that didn’t count. A dropped catch. Two run outs. A stumping. Endless dad jokes. And somehow a 13-run victory. The Wombats may not always make things easy, but they do make them entertaining. Tokyo Wombats 127 all out defeated Aoyama Gakuin 114 all out by 13 runs. “Ugly wins still count for points.”
