Wombats Storm into JC Final
by Rex Kobayashi
Even with the heavens opening throughout the week, Capt. Ken was hell bent on getting our crucial Japan Cup fixture against Aoyama up and running. The Wommies came into the game needing a win to go top of the table, and a loss would mean the lads were out of the Japan Cup Competition.
As the rain was slashing down, the captains walked out to do the toss, the Wombats won and elected to bat, unreal result in these conditions. Out walked Kobayashi and seasoned-vet Nigel, who felt hornier than ever for runs (with his mrs in attendance on the day). The boys got off to a strong start, as the two openers tonked the Uni students around the park. Nigel unfortunately succumbed to a teasing long hop, which brought out Capt. Ken, who was able to continue the momentum. Kobayashi reached his 50, but fell to the only catch the students could hold on to all game. The Wombats kept the pressure on with strong showings from Louis and Ash, reaching a total of just a tick under 200 runs, not a bad effort!
The Wommies got off to a strong start in the field, with some tight bowling from Archit and Joe. The bowling masterclass continued with Louis, Sanira, Aaron (bowling spin for the first time) and northern-Joe (first time bowling ever). The uni students couldn’t handle the accuracy from the boys, and coupled with some solid fielding, the wombats managed to skittle Aoyama for a measely 60-odd, sending the wombats to the top of the table as Minor Premiers, and straight into the Japan Cup Final. Up the Wommies!!
