Wombats Kick Off Title Defence with Thrilling Victory

by Joe Lewis

On a warm Sunday afternoon in early May, the Wombats welcomed the British Embassy to YCAC for the opening match of their South Kanto Division 2 title defence. With promising performances from debutants Ian Sinclair and Sunit Rajan during the pre-season net sessions, the Wombats emerged from their burrows eager to begin the campaign with a victory.

Captain Ken Dobson, continuing in the role for the 2026–27 season, lost the toss and the British Embassy elected to bat first. The Wombats were unfazed, confident in the strength of their bowling attack despite still awaiting the arrival of James Honda (Who has clearly had a few too many beers on Saturday).

First Innings: Extras Prove Costly

The Wombats entered the field full of confidence after several productive training sessions. Joe Lewis summed up the mood, saying, “I’ve not felt this good in years!” However, the British Embassy openers quickly seized the initiative, racing to 68 runs from the opening eight overs, aided by a few wides from the Wombats attack. The hosts gradually regained control through disciplined bowling from debutant Ian Sinclair, who returned figures of 3 overs for 19 runs, including 10 dot balls. As ever, Kavin Jinasena proved difficult to score from in the middle overs, producing figures of 1 for 29 from his four overs and even claiming the wicket of a player rumoured to be a Sri Lankan ambassador via LBW.

Despite some improved bowling performances, the Wombats conceded 30 wides, helping the British Embassy post a challenging total of 176-4 from their 20 overs. The total could have been even higher were it not for an excellent wicketkeeping display from Ash Canning, who did well to gather several wayward deliveries.

Second Innings: Australian Pair Lead the Chase

The British Embassy were confident they had posted a winning score, particularly given the Wombats’ batting struggles in a division 2 fixture during the previous campaign where we skittled out for 46. Chasing 177, the Wombats required a run rate of just under eight runs per over. Captain Ken Dobson opened alongside Ieuan Hames and the pair provided a steady start before Hames was dismissed for 9. New batter Sunit Rajan immediately looked comfortable at the crease, finding the boundary regularly before he and Aidan Sarawan, last season’s Silver Wombat winner, were both dismissed.

At 49-3 after 6.2 overs, the chase was finely balanced. However, with Dobson timing the ball beautifully and Max Turnbull at the crease, the Wombats remained optimistic. Turnbull, playing his final match for the club, produced a superb innings, striking four sixes and scoring at over 150. Supported by Dobson, who anchored the innings throughout, the pair added crucial runs to put the Wombats firmly in control. When Turnbull was eventually dismissed for an excellent 56, the score had moved to 156-4 after 16.2 overs, leaving the Wombats needing just 21 runs from the final 22 deliveries.

Late Drama but Wommies clinch victory

Credit must go to the British Embassy for refusing to surrender. Just as victory appeared inevitable, Perera produced an excellent spell, claiming 3 wickets for 15 runs from his two overs to give his side renewed hope. Devon Snyder briefly supported Dobson before departing without scoring, creating a tense finish. With the Wombats requiring 7 runs from the final over, nerves began to appear around the ground.

Ash Canning joined Dobson at the crease, and the pair calmly rotated the strike before Canning sealed the victory with a powerful boundary. The only disappointment was that Joe Lewis somehow failed to record the winning shot on the digital scorecard.

The match also marked the final appearance of Max Turnbull in Wombats colours as he prepares to return to Australia.

Fittingly, Max finished his Wombats spell in the same manner he began it with a half-century. Throughout his time with the club, he has been a valuable contributor both on and off the field, representing the Wombats across 45-over and T20 formats while making significant contributions with both bat and ball.

Everyone at the Wombats would like to thank Max for his commitment and contribution to the club and wish him all the very best for the future.
