Wombats Down Falcons, Eat Yakitori
by Rex Kobayashi
In the scorching heat of Fuji, an exciting cricket showdown unfolded between Tokyo Wombats CC and Tokyo Falcons CC. The match was not just any ordinary fixture; it showcased a unique ‘brotherly affair’ as the Wombats boasted two sets of brothers in their lineup—the Jinasena brothers and the Choudhury twins.
The Falcons arrived with only five players, resulting in a delayed start as the game couldn’t commence until they had a minimum of seven players. The Wombats, on the other hand, won the toss and opted to field first. Their opening bowlers, Archit Choudhury and Kavin Jinasena, proved to be formidable, making it challenging for the Falcons to score freely.
In the fifth over, Archit Choudhury delivered a sensational in-swinger that shattered the stumps, providing the breakthrough the Wombats needed. Kavin Jinasena joined the party, displaying exceptional bowling skills that saw the Falcons crumbling at 28/4. Wombats’ skipper, Ali, introduced Navin Jinasena into the attack, but it was Kavin who continued his dominance, claiming five wickets and restricting the Falcons to a mere 61 runs. The Wombats’ fielding display was nothing short of outstanding.
Chasing a modest target of 62, the Wombats approached the innings with caution. Opting for quick singles rather than taking unnecessary risks, they steadily accumulated runs. Despite losing a couple of wickets, including young Arpan Choudhury, who was sent up the order to leave his mark on the team, the Wombats remained composed.
Experienced campaigner Kobayashi took matters into his own hands, smashing a six over square leg and sealing the victory for the Wombats. Their disciplined approach and solid team effort led them to a comfortable win, finishing the game early and allowing the team to celebrate their victory with well-deserved beers in town.
It was a memorable day for the Tokyo Wombats CC, marking a significant triumph in their cricketing journey, and showcasing the spirit of camaraderie and determination within the team. The early finish was the cherry on top, as a couple of the lads enjoyed a few hard-earned beers and yakitori.
