Wombats Done and Dusted in 2020

by Sai Mudunuru

On a cloudy day Wombats in their last fixture of the season, captained by Adam Briss put up a spirited performance against IECC. IECC won the toss and decided to bat first which was a favorable decision for Wombats. In the Pre-match pep talk skipper, Adam threw some encouraging lines having seen us warm up more than half an hour. Gearing up to the field, the team mood was good as there was no pressure of expectations.

IECC had a good start and runs started coming easily for them with extras. Soon the Engineers openers were removed with a brilliant c&b from Jamie and an awkward dive at square leg by Chandu in Ali’s bowling who set the trap. At this point IECC was 32-2. Enter Abdul & Prashanth, both looked comfortable in taking singles and dispatching bad deliveries to boundaries. After a slump of no wickets for 8 or 9 odd overs during which some catches were dropped and extras kept the scoreboard ticking, things started kicking in for Wombats with an interesting change in bowling when Pramod decided he can’t see the batting pair hitting anymore and traded his keeping gear to Ali for a ball. He cleaned up the wicket of Prashanth and made it a worthy trade. IECC was 3 down for 99 and things went only downhill from here for the Engineers.

Wombats came back strongly in the last six overs stopping any possible boundaries, extras, and taking wickets at regular intervals. Thanks to timely decisions by the Skipper, Wombats were able to restrict the Engineers to 140/9 in 20 Overs with extras being the second-high scorer (29) of the 1st innings apart from Abdul’s 40. After all the good efforts in the field, our team went to the dugout with a sense of bonding and achievement as the squad was quite new. No one knows if we can score 140 but, we were all up for it.

Wombats got to a flying start in the first over with Chandu scoring two boundaries and two more from the bowler in extras. Brendan the new Wommie with a free-swinging baseball-style got a strikeout on the first delivery. As Chandu continued to bat slowly holding the wicket at his end on the other end new boys Stephan, Callum, Ross all got a good start but couldn’t keep their innings going. With run rate creeping up Chandu lost his wicket swinging wildly. As the clouds loom over, Jamie sent one into the Tennis court getting out by retirement as a penalty and the highest run-scorer of the season getting runout without facing a ball.

Pramod and Adam tried to get things in order and bring the run rate up again with run a ball partnership of 28 but, things were out of reach as they already entered the last five. As Wombat of the Month, Adam decided to hit one out of the park getting banned for life and reducing our score by 10 killing all possibilities which boys were imagining in the dugout. Wombats gave fight till 19.3 and showed never give up spirit even after the colossal damage in middle overs. Extras being the top scorer (22) of 2nd innings, we were all out for 80 after penalty adjustment.

Not a great day for Wombats as we ended up losing the last fixture of the season. Overall, a pathetic season with COVID, washouts due to untimely rains and shit. As a tradition, post-match our team proceeded to Yokohama hub to enjoy the beers. Good things take time to arrive, but they do arrive. Wombats are hopeful for a strong comeback next season!
