Wombats Defeat Rakuten

by Evan Hitchman

The reigning world South Kanto Division 2 champions, the mighty Tokyo Wombats took on newcomers Rakuten. Wommies had a bat first with new recruit from South Africa, Aiden along with Tanzeem opening the batting. They put on a good partnership of 30 odd before Tanzeem was out caught bring newbie Louis Chan from Hong Kong on debut, perhaps the first player for the Wombats to hail from there! He hit his first ball for a glorious cover drive to the boundary as well and unlike most new (and current, and former!) Wombats he actually looked like he had held a cricket bat before! Aiden had a nice knock with some good boundaries too before holing out for 18.

Louis had a short but lively but short innings, getting 10 before getting one that kept low on the always inconsistent YCAC surface. Ash came to the crease and stuck around with some good shots, to help the lower order get the total over 100 with Belayet, Ali and Satyam all scoring handy runs to get the Wommies up to a respectable and defendable 123.

Joe opened the bowling and had a good spell with 0/13, unlucky not get a couple of wickets. Belayet did snare the first wicket with a nice ball and Louis held onto a good catch to have Rakuten 2/35. Regular wickets kept falling and good fielding and bowling put the pressure on Rakuten with Ali, Satyam and Louis all looking dangerous with the ball. Rakuten were all out for 81 giving the Wombats another win as they look to defend their South Kanto Division 2 title!

  • Louis chan on his debut taking a catch at the point. He made it looked so easy.

  • After Louis getting out and returning his daughter welcome him saying “Papa you came back so quickly”

Great Moments in Sport

  • Satyam back to back wickets
  • Belayet’s beautiful knock of 11 runs from 4 balls.
  • Partnership between Ashley and Satyam
  • U19 player made a debut. Rare things to have young players in Wombats recently.

Dummy Spits

  • Joe Lewis: While he was batting and got stuck with a ball on pads and then asking umpires was it really not out as if he really wanted to go back earlier.

Golden Thong Nominations

  • Debutant for wombat who looked decent when he held the bat before the game but when he wore the pads, they were upside down
