Wombats Max’d Out in Sano

by Kavin Jinasena

As the Japanese summer intensifies, 11 Wombats (+2) gathered at SICG (Not Fuji, IYKYK) to play against possibly the strongest side currently in the JCL Division 1, Max CC. Headed by the skipper Muhammad Ali, we also had a formidable side, featuring the Japanese International Pro, Alex Shirai Patmore. It is also great to see some young blood in the Wombats, with two U19s making their appearances and hopefully soon making their debuts in Wombats colors. As the warm up gets underway, and after several lunches being stolen by the local hoodlums, Ali wins the toss and chooses to bat first.

A slight change to the lineup with Alex and Masaki opening up with Richie going at 4. The two openers showed plenty of patience and grit as the opening bowler kept his line and length with occasional bouncers. After a promising start, Masaki offered a false stroke and departed for 14. Soon after, Ali, Alex and the rest of the Wombats line up collapsed. However, Tanzeem showed plenty of promise with his stroke play, hitting a couple boundaries, finishing with an unbeaten 21. There are not many highlights to speak of as the Wombats finished nine down for 135 after 40 overs.

With a total of 135, the Wombats had to focus on getting through the prized wickets of Hanif, Taniyama and Supun to have a chance of winning. Fozan and Kavin to open the bowling for a bit of pace and spin. However, the opening pair of Taniyama and Hanif had no problem navigating through the score, with Hanif muscling a quickfire 62 before getting caught off Yohan. With lots of wickets in hand, Max was not afraid to go after the ball which resulted in them chasing our score down in 12.3 overs.

It was a tough day out for the Wombats, failing on both batting and bowling. However, we stayed positive throughout and after the game, with post-game drinks and Tekitonies. We also had two promising U19s supporting us with water and equipment runs. On a more positive note, there are plenty of areas that need to be worked on which we can reflect on for the next game against the Paddy Foley’s at Fuji. Go the Wommies!

MoM: Masaki Kawashima for his resilient batting effort as an opener.

Masaki Kawashima
vs Max (June 24, 2023)
Masaki put his head down and battled hard at the top of the order. A tenacious display against a very good bowling attack, that ultimately got the better of the Wombats.
