TWCC Fall Short in JCL T20 Debut

by Tanzeem Khedekar

With the Japanese summer at its full intensity (36 degrees with feel like 42), JCL T20 League match at SICG 1 showcased an exciting clash between Tokyo Wombats 1st XI and Tokyo Falcons 1st XI. Wombats captain Ali won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Wombats starting with Young gun Archit who manages to bowled near perfect start except 5wides and from other end Joe started swinging the balls and was able to get Siddharth off 5th ball, continuing from the other Archit boweld the short ball which got hit for Six by Abhi Telang but Archit continued the 2nd ball a good sharp body line bouncer which Abhi couldn’t dealt and tangled to give catch to Ali.

With the very impressive start for Wombats the Falcon’s duo of Sanket Pindahri and Sameep batted with caution and aggression and were able to stitch 68 runs in next 8 overs with score of 83 in 11 over

With Abhishek getting rid off Sanket (46 off 35) in 11th over Wombat wanted to tighten the screws to restrict Falcons to 140-150 in walks Abhishek Anand with total different ideas and wide range of shots with breath taking knock of 86 off just 29 balls with 9 towering sixes Falcon manages to post mammoth total of 212/6 in 20 overs

The highlight of their innings was of course Abhishek Anand’s 86 off just 29 balls, Sanket Pindahri (46 off 35), Hitesh (20 off 12), Sameep (20 off 23), and Manish (16 off 8) contributed significantly to their team’s total. Wombats’ bowlers tried hard to contain the opposition, with Joe taking 2 wickets, and Archit, Belayet, Ashish, and Ali claiming 1 wicket each. Robb was the most economical, conceding only 23 runs in his 3 overs without taking any wickets.

In the chase, Wombats started briskly with openers Ali and Masaki adding 29 runs in 3.3 overs. However, Ali’s dismissal on the fourth ball to a catch by short third man off Dev Mishra’s bowling was a blow. Ashish followed suit, getting out on the very first ball and setting up a hat trick ball for Tanzeem. Though Tanzeem managed to survive the hat trick ball, he and Kawashima added only 10 more runs before Mishra struck again, removing Kawashima for 11 off 12.

Nigel McKay joined Tanzeem at the crease, and they built a promising partnership of 42 runs. Tanzeem contributed a solid 21 off 16 balls with 4 boundaries before falling victim to Anand’s delivery, caught by Kurulkar at deep square leg.

With required run rate climbing by each ball, Wombats needed 132 runs in 9 overs, Nigel top scored at 31 off 36 with 2 fours and 1 six had to retire out due to the scorching heat, his absence left a void in the middle order.

Arpan, replacing Nigel, played a steady knock of 21 off 21 with 3 fours but was eventually caught out by Kurulkar off Anand’s bowling. Wombats’ chase faced further hurdles as Belayet skied a delivery and was caught on the second ball he faced. Joe entered the crease and Archit got run out in the 19th over, scoring 5 off 7 balls. Then Robb and Joe, who managed to finish the innings at 130/8 in 20 overs.

Despite the best efforts, Wombats couldn’t muster the required runs and unfortunately fell short by 82 runs.

Wombats will be looking to bounce back stronger in their next match, aiming for a better performance and a victory.
