Kubota K.O.’s Wombats…Again!
by Evan Hitchman
On Sunday, it was off to YC&AC for Round 3 of the Japan Cup T20 competition, and again we had a few cry offs late, leaving us with only 10 for the game. That should be enough against Keio University though….right? Batting first, the wommies made a statement that we were taking this game seriously, leaving nothing to chance – with our strongest opening bowler batter Joe Lewis and our strongest runner between the wickets drinker, Adam Birss starting us off. Adam unbelievably got run out attempting a quick single (that’ll teach him!) and Alok got a grubber that didn’t bounce and was out LBW, leaving us in trouble. Never fear though, Wales’ #1 opener Joe Lewis looked solid as a rock, and hit some swashbuckling boundaries in a great partnership with Kenny (the male model from Mudgee) Dobson, to set up the innings. Solid contributions later on from Max, Brett, Kavin, Ash and in particular from debutants W.Ides (19) and N.O’Ball (26) helped the Wombats to a very defendable 7/148 from our 20 overs.
That should be way more than enough against Keio. Shouldn’t it? I mean, they couldn’t, could they?
Opening up with Brett and Kavin, the Keio openers Ueda and Yoko Ono took a liking to the saffa pies that were served up, quickly getting up to 50 before the first wicket fell to Kavin, who bowled tight as always. Aidan picked up another wicket, before Sunny and Max were called into the attack to try and stop the Keio chase. The Uni boys were on a mission though, with our old foe Kohei Kubota putting together crucial partnerships with Sato and Kawashima and ticking it over around 7, 8 an over, leaving the Wombats in need of wickets or an upset was on the cards. Finally Kavin broke the partnership, but it was too little, too late with Keio getting the runs with 5 balls to go, and a famous victory against the defending world champions Japan Cup South Kanto Division 2 Champions!
Cricket was the winner though, and many beers were enjoyed as the players tried to rehydrate after the brutally hot day.
