President Rant (13-03-2009)

I get pestered from our webmistress and others about how little I write for this section of the website. The answer I usually give is that the title says "President's Rant" and there just isn't anything to rant about. So when I write a rant without being asked to, you know that I have something to rant about! I attended the JCL (formerly J1C, cue smartarse comment from Axe) AGM Sunday afternoon hence my absence from training. Now before I get to my rant, let me give you a condensed minutes of the meeting (I have yet to receive the "official" minutes):

Extras

* No balls: Any ball (full toss) bowled above waist height will be deemed a no ball, regardless of the speed of the ball.

* Wide: Off Side = Guide line (Fuji #2) or width of the pitch (Fuji #1), Leg Side = Any ball that passes down the leg side.

* "No Ball Dead Ball”: Any ball bowled that hits the edge of the pitch shall be called a “no ball dead ball” immediately and count as one extra.

- Apart from the leg side wide, all those rules are the same as last year. The committee decided that the leg side wide should be any ball down leg side so as to make the job easier for the umpire. A bit tough in my book but I do understand where they are going with this and it will hopefully make leg side wides more consistent. If you're a bowler, no need to whine. Just don't bowl down leg side! You blokes are just there to start the game anyway. For those that umpire this year, please let me know if you want clarification.

Note: I spoke with Pat the other day and it seems the leg side wide rule may be amended because the committee mistakenly thought that this was the wide rule as per the laws of the game. Having discovered that its not, they are re-thinking the rule. I'll keep you all posted.

Storage Shed & Key

As per last year, stored at Furuiya. Teams will be designated each week to handle the key.

Balls

Teams can buy their own balls (Red Kings) this year if they want or they can ask the JCA and have the balls delivered to the JCA office or Furuiya.

- I've decided that we'll get the balls ourselves this year as we get the same discount that the JCA gets and its easier to have them delivered to my place rather than having to pick them up. Once I take delivery, I'll give GT and Burkey a few each. With the strong yen, I'll order a box and then we'll have some for practice games and next season as well.

Umpires

Umpires are asked to wear dark pants and shoes and a light shirt with a collar, preferably white.

Team Captains

Captains were asked to fill out an umpires report on one of the cards that will be placed in the shed at the Fuji grounds. Anton McCloy has kindly offered to erect a post box in the shed where all umpire report cards shall be posted at the completion of each game. He will collect them and use the data to improve the standards of umpiring in Japan.

- Both umpires and team captains were encouraged to report anything good or bad about the day, such as any disputes arising during the game, disputes regarding the eligibility of players, or any disputes that the JCL committee should rule on, gear missing from the shed, broken gear, or even golfers chipping on the grounds, to the JCL committee in writing as soon as possible.

Teams

This year the JCA has allowed teams to enter second 11s so the Predators and Sano (formerly Millennium) are entering second 11s. This is how the team list looks:

Div. 1

* Wombats

* Wyverns

* Sharks

* British Embassy

* Sano Div. 1 (formerly Millenium)

* Predators Div. 1

Div. 2

* Max

* Fuji Far East (FFE)

* Adore

* Paddy Foleys

* University XI

* Sano Div. 2

* Predators Div. 2

- The playoff system will still be in use, but Sano and Predators are exempt so their respective #1 sides cannot be demoted, and their respective #2 sides cannot be promoted. 2 teams will be promoted to Div. 1 this year and 1 will be demoted so that in 2010, Div. 1 will have 7 teams and Div. 2 will have 6 teams. For 2010 onwards, 1 team from Div. 2 will be demoted and 1 promoted so that it stays as 7/6.

The following is the promotion/relegation system:

* The highest ranked team in 2nd Grade which does not have a 1st XI in 1st Grade in will be promoted to 1st Grade for the 2010 Season.

* The highest ranked team shall be determined in the following order: Winner, Runner-up, highest ranked team in the regular season (which does not have a 1st XI in 1st Grade).

* The lowest ranked team in 1st Grade which does not have a 2nd XI in 2nd Grade will play-off with the 2nd highest ranked team in 2nd Grade which does not have a 1st XI in 1st Grade. The winner of this match will play in 1st Grade in 2010, and the loser will play in 2nd Grade.

* The lowest ranked team shall be determined in the following order: Loser of 5th vs. 6th playoff, lowest ranked team in the regular season (which does not have a 2nd XI in 2nd Grade).

* The 2nd highest ranked team shall be determined in the following order: Runner-up, highest ranked team in the regular season (which does not have a 1st XI in 1st Grade).

* If a match is rained out and reserve days exhausted in the semi finals, final, playoff etc., the winner will be determined by the position they finished the round-robin. [(e.g.) 1st will have an advantage over 4th in the 1st vs. 4th match.]

Rant

So what does this mean? Simply put, it means a situation may arise where the 5th and 6th teams are Sano and Predators, yet it will be the team that finished 4th that will have to go into a play-off with the second highest ranking side in Div. 2 to see which team is promoted/relegated. Considering that Sano have been cellar-dwellers for a few seasons now, and the Predators are newly promoted after struggling to be promoted from Div. 2 (who can forget them being bowled out for 50 inside 20 overs and the game being over before lunch in the final 2 seasons ago), its a very real possibility. We could also have a situation where the 3rd placed Div. 2 team is promoted. So games could be extremely lopsided, which isn't good for either team. It seems to me that the JCA is encouraging mediocrity. When challenged on that point, the JCA CEO, Alex Miyaji, disagreed saying what they were in fact doing was encouraging clubs that are actively building their player base. So if a club has lots of players, even if they are rubbish, they stay in Div. 1. In my opinion, that's encouraging mediocrity.

The JCA's goal is for each club to have a second 11 and until every team has a second 11, we are left with a situation whereby clubs with 2 teams aren't subject to regulation/promotion. When I suggested that the JCA have it ass-backwards and should be finding grounds before expanding player base, I was told that we haven't got to the point where there are too many teams for the current number of grounds yet and that when it comes to grounds, there were things in the works and I should "trust" them. Considering the possibility of a Fuji #3 has been bandied around for 5 years with no results to speak of, its hard to follow that advice. Furthermore, the lack of transparency is a real concern as is the planning philosophy; you don't build a league of 20-odd teams and then find the grounds. Even though cricket is still a minor sport with very few people playing it, its still easier to get people to play the game than it is to find grounds. It seems to me that they are expanding for expansions sake.

Now I am aware of a ground at Sano that will be used in the JCL this year - that is indeed a reality as I have played on it - but there are 2 issues with it: It will be a flicx and not a concrete pitch (I'd imagine that the JCA plan to put down a concrete pitch there at some stage if they can but certainly for at least the near future, it'll be a flicx), and its extremely small, far smaller than Fuji. Its certainly not up to scratch for Div. 1 teams, and arguably not up to scratch for Div. 2 teams either. Perhaps the J2C can play up there, alleviating pressure on the Fuji grounds, but that in itself creates its own problems as the JCA's biggest supporter, the hotel association in Fuji, gets their business from players staying overnight to play 2 day games.

Another concern is the fact that Sano played with less than 11 players for most of last year so where are they getting their players from? I've heard that Gunma university and a lot of the kids that play cricket up there will form their player base. The Predators ability to put 2 teams on the park is also a real concern. I've heard that they have a very large player base but the logistics of getting 2 sides to Fuji is nothing to be sneezed at. A number of comments from the Predators representatives attending the meeting also made me wonder if they could pull it off. I'm sure both teams will make sure they have 11 for their Div. 1 sides (although there is no incentive to do so) but teams in Div. 2 could suffer through forfeights or facing less than full strength teams.

I made my feelings loud and clear at the AGM and I clearly stated that the Wombat's members wouldn't buy this in its current form. But I will say this. I'm prepared to give the JCA this year to see if it works. If it works, it might even be good for cricket in Japan, and if they do happen to have some more grounds up their sleeves, then maybe other teams can tie up with uni teams and create second 11s. Exapnsion is good for cricket in Japan, but not like this. There are bigger fish to fry at the moment, such as maintaining the grounds that we have now!

Message From the President (27-02-2009)

A new season is fast approaching and in preparation for it, we had our AGM last Saturday. There was quite a bit of change for the club this year. Firstly, Chuck stepped down as captain and GT was elected in his place. Curly also stepped down as social secretary and was replaced by our webmistress, Big Ghey Al. GT and Al have big shoes to fill but I'm confident both will do a fine job. We also agreed we should spend more time at the Black Lion in Meguro watching cricket, drinking and socialising in general. Scott always treats us superbly and since we haven't had a home in a few years, this would be the perfect place to make a burrow.

Unfortunately the turnout for the AGM was extremely disappointing, and one major challenge the club will face throughout the year is finding 11 players to wear the Wombat shirt. Its the biggest challenge this club has faced in its 7 year history, and with club mainstays and inaugural members Chuck and Curly returning to Australia next year, the club could be in serious danger of slowly disappearing. Therefore, the club needs current members to represent the club as much as possible, and to also ask any mates they may have to come and have a hit with us. Posters have been placed in some bars in Tokyo to attract new members, and depending on the results of those posters, we may also place ads in the Metropolis.

Wombat numbers for our annual CM 6s tour may be indicative of the season ahead. Currently, only Curls and I from Japan are going, with Marty coming from Oz. We will again have the Sri Lankan ex-international Pushpakamara playing for us and occasional CM tour member Paul Knightington will also most likely suit-up. But we are still one player down so I have asked a few teams in Tokyo and the KRAC in Osaka if they have anyone interested in coming. Barring success on those fronts, we will have to source from other CM teams when we get there.

We will still be favourites to defend our J1C title - especially with Wyverns and national team player Gavin Beath likely to become a Wombat this season - but much will depend on our ability to field 11 at every game. As for other teams, the runners-up from the past 2 seasons, Wyverns, may struggle as not only are they likely to lose Beathy, they've also lost their opening bowler and national team player Patrick Giles-Jones to Ichihara, which will improve the Shark's chances. Although one could argue that they are on an even keel, recruiting-wise, as by far their best player, Dhugal, has returned to Australia. BECC will struggle to field a team this year, as they have done for the past few years, and the job hasn't been made easier with their co-skipper and main organiser, Anton Winston, in Dubai for much of the season. Millennium will again struggle for players this year and their force on the pitch will be decided by whether they can get their best 11 players together. As they have only done so for play-off games for the past few seasons, expect them to be cellar dwellers again. The unknown prospect are the newly promoted Predators. They are one of the few teams with an abundance of players but the question remains: are any of them any good? By getting rid of their opening bowler/batsman/captain/cricketer extraordinaire they are certainly a more balanced side from what I have seen. But will their bowlers be able to handle the likes of Burke, Jones, Turner, Ferris, or their batsman wilt when facing Koolhof, Gason, Shackleford et al? Only time will tell, although we certainly will get an idea of their quality when we face them in a practice game on the 15th of March. As of this writing, we are undermanned, but I'm sure we shall have 11 able bodied Wombats to take the field come game day.

Good luck to all Wombats for the season ahead and let's make this another year of the 'bat!

Japan Men's National Team Selection Announced (15-10-2007)

You may know that last weekend a national team selection camp was conducted in Fuji, with as many as 28 players turning up to try out. As the Head Selector of the Japan Men's National Team, I'm pleased to announce the squad for the up-coming 6-team tournament in Auckland, New Zealand from November 29 to December 9, featuring Japan, Indonesia, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands. The official announcement can be found here:

http://www.cricket.or.jp/new_jca/news_view.php?CAT=00000784

Perusing the list you may notice one name in particular:

コートニー・ジョーンズ(ウォンバッツCC) C. Jones

No Courtney Jones isn't Chuck's evil twin brother. That is indeed our very own Skipper, Chucky! By being named in the squad he has created Wombats history by becoming the first ever Wombat to represent Japan! Congratulations Chuck! He was chosen as a specialist batsman - which is not to disparage his bowling ability - and due to his ability to bat anywhere in the order, he may bat anywhere from opening right through to #6, depending upon the state of the game and the tournament, and the form of others.

As for the squad in general, we believe we have chosen a balanced squad with a mix of veteran and young players that we believe can win the tournament. We also believe we have a good mix of bowlers and batsman, and in the spirit of horses for courses as our opposition aren't known for their ability to play spin, we have chosen 3 spinners: 2 leggies and an offie. Local wisdom also suggests the Auckland (turf) wickets will be low and slow and take spin. Make no mistake: our goal is to win the tournament and anything less will be considered a failure.

This tournament is hugely important for the future of Japanese cricket. In fact, its arguably the most important tournament the Japanese team has ever played in. If they win the tournament, they will play in Division 5 of the World Cricket League next year in Jersey. If they lose, they will not play another tournament for almost 2 years and as the ICC is moving to more performance-based financial incentives, they will have their funding reduced. Quite frankly, I'm not full-bottle on what happens if they lose because I'm not considering losing.

Good luck to all players selected!

Captain's Message for 2007 Season (21-3-2007)

G'day Tokyo Wombats Cricket Club and welcome back for the 2007 season. From a playing perspective we're looking like having a busy start to the season. Practise games starting March 18th, the legendary Chiang Mai 6s in early April, the start of the J1C in mid-April and the Kobe Challenge at the end of May, so we'll be hitting the ground running come mid-March lads!

I'm delighted to again have Burkey as our V.C. and Coach. Please support and get behind him this season and don't be afraid to ask for advice whenever you think you need it because he has a wealth of cricketing knowledge and experience.

Some personnel changes this season with Gez and Zulu leaving Japan and moving onto blonder, colder things in Gez's case(Finland) and quieter things(Hervey Bay) in Zulu's case. Both were top players and blokes and their presence will be greatly missed. However, the club is delighted to welcome 2005 Golden Wombat winner, Alex "The Body" Koolhof back into the fold after his studies in Oz. He's a top bowler and will no doubt be a perfect replacement for Gez Brady. Also, rumours abound that Jammer will be resuming his glittering career with the Wombats and uping his official van beer drinking record.

Last season was obviously highly successful, winning the inaugural J1C Championship, The Pacific Cup, The Hardy's Ashes and we easily accounted for Kobe in the Kobe Challenge. From a team success perspective we couldn't have done any better. This season our goal must be to go back-to-back in the J1C. I think we can all agree that the J1C functioned well last season and playing all games on the best pitches in Japan, at the scenic Fuji grounds really made for good quality cricket. A personal goal of mine is to put our very best team on the park for all J1C fixtures so to give the Japanese teams really good competition. The more exposure they get to good quality cricket the more the Japanese will improve and develop. The Pacific Cup is also an important fixture for our club as it means playing competitive games at the delightful Shizuoka ground against quality opposition in the Shizuoka Kytes. Winning this comp again in 2007 is vital in securing us extra games on top of our J1C committments the folowing season. In a first for the club we'll be playing a day/niter this season. Following on the success of the inaugural Kobe Challenge of 2006 we've been invited back for another weekend of cricket on May 26th and 27th. The day/niter will certainly be a unique and exciting opportunity and I'm defineately looking forward to that weekends cricket and festivities. The facilites and hospitality afforded to us in 2006 was just top class so let's really support this event and make it enjoyable for everyone involved. This seasons tour has the potential to be one of the highlights of our clubs history!

As you can see we have a big season ahead of us and again I'd like T.W.C.C. to lead the way in sportsmanship, fair play and respect for the game of cricket, through socialising with the opposition, respecting eachother and remembering we're playing "the gentlemens game!"

also want players to simply enjoy their season. Take cricket in Japan for what it is: An opportunity for us to get out of Tokyo, play the game we love and share some beers with mates post game, nothing more. We aren't playing for anything other than pleasure so don't take it too seriously if something doesn't go your way on the field. The cricketing karma gods always even things up in the end! At the same time our club culture demands we play to win so for the 80 overs I'm representing the Tokyo Wombats each weekend I'll be giving 100% to our winning cause and I expect every other person who puts on the T.W.C.C. shirt to do the same this season.

Finally, I deeply appreciate you guys allowing me to lead the team in 2007. It's a tremendous personal honour to lead such a fantastic team and group of cricketers. I guarantee I'll do all I can to make this season as enjoyable and as successful as ever. Go hard in season 2007 Tokyo Wombats!

Cheers,

Chuck

President's Rant for 2007 Season (21-3-2007)

The season is yet to "officially" begin, but the Wombats have already put in some quality pre-season drinking, ah, I mean training. We've had 2 net sessions, one at Shinagawa and the other at Goi, where a total of about 15 Wombats turned out. We've also had a very good hit out against the Shizuoka Kytes in Shizuoka. Pleasingly, 3 blokes made runs with Rhino and Doc both getting amongst it with quality 50s; their first 50s for the club! As importantly was the way they got their runs with good, aggressive stroke play. Unfortunately one Jurassic creature was too slow as usual and not as many players got a hit as we would have liked. The bowling was likewise pleasing with the Wombats bowling out the Kytes with some overs to spare. Importantly, a new talent in the form of Atul was uncovered and he was amongst it with 2 wickets - the first being an absolute pearler to castle the batsman and the second removed danger man Russell, up all the way from Kobe to scout for this year's Kobe Challenge match. The Pidge also had no cobwebs from his 2 year layoff and bowled an outstanding spell with the new ball. A record at Shizuoka in terms of economy we were told by statistician Robert and undoubtedly will feature in Captain Chuck's match report. One selfish show pony bowler in particular didn't get a full run with the ball, although he did knock over the tail. So a few players are still underdone, but another practice game this Sunday - against the Dragons at Fuji that will feature a special guest in the form of an African warrior - will give more guys a chance to have a bat and a bowl. It's also worth noting that Captain Chuck made a very perceptive comment on the days play,"All those players that have been to training made runs or took wickets." Can't argue with that. Rocket science and all that…

The schedule has now been released and our ever-diligent Webmaster has updated the fixtures section of the Web site. As most of you blokes can't read above a third grade-level, let alone have the patience to look at the fixtures, I thought I would flesh-out the highlights of it.

Chiang Mai Sixes: First Week of April

Yeah, I know only a few of us are going but that's the point of listing it! If yer not going for the 20th Anniversary edition, you only have yourself to blame! As for stories, the golden rule of tours will be strictly enforced this year so "what goes on tour, stays on tour!"

First game: April 15

Not only is it our first game of the season, it's a grand final replay! I have no doubt that they will come at us hard to avenge the grand final loss to us last year. So it should be a HUGE game.

Wombats Vs Millennium: May 19

They've really turned into our bogey term. It's a game that the Skip has ear-marked as a must win. This game has also been scheduled on a Saturday, a day we traditionally struggle to get an 11 together, let alone our best side. One Alex Miyaji, their opening bowler and someone I work closely with in the national team, knows this fact and works for the JCA. Did he have a hand in it? Reggie will be screaming conspiracy! Should add extra spice to the clash.

Hardy's Kobe Challenge: May 27/28

Can't get any bigger than last year you say? You squat to piss, as one Black Nikka drinking croweater native likes to say. In fact he is in the process of ordering a trophy worthy of the stature of this event as we speak. More importantly, we will also be playing our first EVER day/night fixture! Want to make Wommies history? Well, you better be there, hadn’t you?

Hardy's Tokyo Ashes: TBA

I'm going to look to schedule the game some time in June or July seeing as we have an almost 2 month break during this period. Regardless of when we play it, it should be a great day. We are looking in to hiring a big bus and getting some spectators down for the day. As is usual for Ashes clashes, there'll be plenty of food and drink on offer.

Pacific Cup: TBA

Not sure when it will be played, but with the season finishing earlier this year, hopefully it won't be played in December again!

Finals: August/September

As great (and even not so great) AFL coaches say, "We're taking it one week at a time" so we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. However, there'’s no denying that the finals are why we all play the game (that, and the van rides) so its definitely our major goal of the season to defend our inaugural J1C crown.

Its shaping up to be an awesome year! Let's hope it's the Year of the Wombat!

Cheers,

The Prez

The Prez thanks KRAC (5-7-2006)

When Robb McKenna first asked me if we would be interested in heading down to Kobe for a weekend of cricket, I didn't think there would be much interest, let alone a full team. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the interest in the trip was overwhelming, and anticipation was high. I think its fair to say that in the end all of our expectations were far exceeded. Even though we were only able to play one game due to rain, everyone had a great time.

For that, on behalf of all the Wombats who travelled to Kobe, I'd like to thank Robb and Russel for proposing and organising the trip at their end, and Chuck for organising the trip at our end. I'd also like to thank the staff and management of the KRAC for allowing us to stay at the KRAC and for putting up with our antics. The feast prepared for the party on Saturday night was outstanding, and the 2 hour nomihoudai was easily longer than 2 hours. The food and service in general were great and the prices more than reasonable.

The Wombats had such a good time that, if the KRAC will have us, the Wombats are very keen to travel to Kobe again next year. In fact, we would be keen to make this an annual event. Perhaps we could play for "The Hardy's Wombats/KRAC Trophy"

Cheers,
Jarrad.

Message from Captain (8-3-2006)

Welcome Wombats to the 2006 season. Already some big changes and decisions made within the club. Pulling out of the JGC 20/20 competition was a club decision which I think in the long run will benefit all members. We'll be playing 40 over friendly games to replace the JGC this season. The commitee have made a decision to use these games as a chance for the fringe and new players to be heavily involved and show case their skills in a low pressure environment.

For the first time in Tokyo Wombats C.C. history we haven't lost any players during the off season and just as importantly we have recruited strongly. With Gerrard joining us we have a quality performer and bloke both on and off the field whom I'm sure will have a great season. Brendan and Dave have shown a willingness to to play this year and we're all looking forward to seeing them do well for the Wommies in 2006.

I know everyone agrees season 2005 was a very successful and enjoyable one but ultimately we didn't do it full justice by just coming up short in the G.F. We have the talent in our current squad to win KCL Division 1 in 2006 and I have no doubt that with improvement and application out of all players we will go all the way this season. Hopefully the disappointment of experiencing another team beat us in the last game of 2005 will provide us with that little piece of inspiration to do better when the pressure is on in 2006.

2006 is a new start for all clubs and whatever we achieved in 2005 means nothing come that first game in April. At times last year we achieved victory comparitively easily but I can assure you teams won't be underestimating us this season. We played in the Div 1 GF and beat very strong and capable clubs in 2005. Everyone in Japan now knows our strength as club and will be gunning to bring us down this year so all players will have to be at thier very best on match days. Div 1 in 2006 is undoubtably the strongest in Japan cricket history. The Shizuoka Kytes C.C. and Wyverns C.C. have moved into the top division after very impressive 2005's. We know the Kytes as a proud and talented team who play passionate and competitive cricket like the Wombats. The Kytes captain, Neil assured me they were going to inflict their first ever victory over the Wombats last year in our unfortunately cancelled Pacific Cup game. I'm really looking forward to playing them this season. The Wyverns are predominantly Japanese with half the team currently playing for the national team or in the past having played for the Japan national team. Combined with their talented foreigners the Wyverns will certainly be playing to the level required to compeat in Div 1.

One of our strengths in 2005 was our fielding and presence out on the ground. Our catching was consistently very good and our ground fielding was always very solid. Let's aim to better these levels in 2006 by working on our weaknesses at training. The levels of talk and encouragement on the field last season were awesome and intimidating to the opposition. Please keep it up this season through encouragement for each other and humor out on the ground. I want the opposition batsmen to feel its 11 vs 2 when they play the Wombats. Let's play hard but fair this year lads!

As I said at the AGM. Our 2006 goals are:

1. To continue to set the league standard for respect to umpires, our opposition and cricket in general. If you get a rough decision go against you, cop it on the chin and move on. I really believe they even themselves out in the end.

2. To continue to make an effort to socialise with the opposition after games. I'd like us to be known not only as a great cricket club but also a good bunch of blokes.

3. Win the KCL Div 1! We have the talent and desire!

4. Let's get our very best side on the park for every KCL game in 2006. Try your best to be available for these games so that we can do our club justice and win Div 1 in 2006!

Finally, a hopefully annual fixture is in the planning for this season. The Kobe Cricket Club have invited the Wombats to play a weekend of cricket against them. The rough plan is to catch a shink to Kobe on a Friday night. Upon arrival we will be billeted out to a couple of the Kobe boys houses for our weekends free accomodation, followed by a few drinks at the local bar. Saturday play a game vs Kobe C.C. followed by post game BBQ. I'm told the cricket ground is in the middle of the city and 5 mins to the local bars so we'll be kicking on for a big night with the Kobe lads. Sunday another game vs Kobe C.C. and the shink back to Tokyo. As you can see it'll be a unique chance for us as a team to travel in Japan and play a couple of games of cricket against a new foe. We're planning this for August/September. Keep this in mind when planning for late summer as I'm sure it will be a fantastic weekend of cricket and memories. I'll keep all updated as details come to hand.

Have a very enjoyable and memorable 2006 Japan cricket season Wombats and let's bring home what's rightfully ours, the Div 1 cup!

Cheers,
Captain Chuck.

Message from President (18-1-2005)

Its been a while since I had a rant so with the new season fast approaching, I thought it was appropriate to have a bit of a rant. My New Year's resolution is to write in this column more often as I only wrote one rant all year last year.

The season is yet to begin but its all systems go behind the scenes.

Firstly, Chuck and I will be attending the KCL AGM on the 30th of January.

Then on the 20th of February the Wombats will have their AGM at the Clubhouse in Shinjuku from 5pm. The will include important items from the KCL AGM, a financial statement, election of committee members, and other important information for the upcoming season. It will also be an important chance for all Wombats members to have their say. And don't forget, if you want to vote, you have to have paid your yearly membership by that date.

You may pay before the start of the AGM if you wish. I'll post full details with an agenda in the near future.

Then in March we'll have our first practice session for the year and hopefully a practice match will be organised for some time in March or early April. Also in March for the non-peahearts of the club, or as Nikka would say, those that don't squat to piss, the Chiang Mai 6s tournament will be held. It should be a great week of playing cricket and drinking with mates old and new. Plenty of new friends will also be made, and from a club perspective, new relationships will begin, hopefully blossoming into reciprocal tours and other cricket exchanges. Ian will be posting something in the coming days about the CM6s.

In April the season kicks off in earnest. In the KCL, as we were Division 2 Premiers last year, we have been promoted to Division 1 and we will make our debut in Division 1. The teams are generally a lot stronger and more well organised in DI than DII so there should be some excellent cricket played. In the JGC, no word as yet from the organisers of that competition as to the structure of the league for 2005.

An exciting development from the JCA is that they are looking to establish a third permanent ground in Fuji with a concrete pitch. The Fuji City Council is very supportive and it seems they also have found a potential ground. That ground may turn out to be unsuitable but nonetheless it is a promising development.

Finally sometime in February or March a day or weekend of ground maintenance is going to be organised. As the Wombats have always been proactive in helping with the Fuji ground, the caretakers of the ground have already contacted me and asked for our support. The fact that we are the first they call is a wonderful tribute to our club and how hard we work for Japan cricket supporting such things as the Fuji grounds, so I for one am keen to get other fellow Wombats done to Fuji and not let the caretakers (Mark McTamney and Anton McCloy) down. They do a lot of hard work and its up to us to give them as much support as we can. They have also said they are keen to get on the piss with us and make a big night of it. Mark and Anton are great blokes, even though they are Kiwis, and a great time will be had by all. I'll post details as they come to hand so stay tuned.

That's it for the minute. I'll keep you all posted for further developments.

Cheers,
President Grumpy.

Messages from President and Coach

Konnichiwa, G'day and howzat!

The Wombats are about to embark on their third season of cricket in Japan. Our goal for this season is to win both our leagues, the Kanto Cricket League, and the Japan Gold Cup. Qualifying for KCL Division 1 is a must for the Club, and we can only take this huge step by first making the Division 2 final. With the expansion of the JGC, and the amalgamation of Division 2 in the KCL this year, there is tonnes of cricket on offer. Only our mortal enemy rain can stop us from having a huge season.

New Captain Chuck Jones is going all out to win his second Golden Wombat Best And Fairest Award. But the queue of blokes wanting to take it off him is longer than Shoaib Akhtar's run-up, so competition is hot.

Off the field, Curly and the social committee have a big year planned ahead. I'm sure Zulu and co. will get into as much trouble this year as they did last year. The question on everyone's lips in Wombat Land is will Zulu make it two Golden Thongs in a row? Who can stop him? Who would want to?

The buzz around the club is electric. A couple of new recruits, the eagerness of all the boys, the hard yards in the nets: I have no doubt we WILL achieve our goals. Two years in a row it has taken some superb cricket from the eventual winners in the JGC to stop us. This year will be different! No settling for second best this year......

The Wombats Juggernaut is about to depart. Nothing can stop it once it starts!

Cheers,
Jarrad Shearer.
President TWCC.

A Word from the Pres.

G'day! Welcome to the Tokyo Wombats' web site, our little burrow in cyber space. We are just about to start our third season of cricket in Kanto, but we are new to this Internet gizmo (we are marsupials you know!) We have put up this web site so our members, near and far, can easily keep track of us, and we can attract new members. Also our families, wherever they may be, can look and say "Ah, little Fred. I remember when he was crap at cricket here in Oz. Look how he's grown up. Nothing has changed I see." And so we can all laugh at Zulu's exploits as he endeavours to win back to back Golden Thongs, the crown for the stupidest creature in Wombat Land.

All you've ever wanted to know about wombats can be found here! Get the Club history and background at 'TWCC'; read the President's Rant to see why he is always grumpy; check out Curly's Corner for upcoming events, as well as some irrelevant anecdote; see what our past members are up to in Wombats out of the Burrow; laugh with (or is it at?) Zulu as he and others outlinehis latest wild adventure in the Z-Files; coming soon is Hardy's Wine of the Month section, with info on products, promotions and specials. Eats, roots and leaves? Not true! Take a look at our ugly mugs and details in the Profiles section. And finally of course there's cricket! For all the ins and outs out in the field, the Match Report and Man of the Match should fill you in on our latest victory as we march to the JGC and KCL Championship trophies!

Oh, and don't forget to click on our sponsor's links! HARDYS' sell some great wines for all occasions, and The Clubhouse is THE place to have a drink or three while watching cricket, Aussie Rules and even other lesser sports. They even sell Aussie beers and meat pies!

We hope to make this a fun site so you will come back again and again. It will also change frequently, so please don't forget to book mark us and visit again soon.

Cheers,
Tokyo Wombats Cricket Club
